Costs of Procuring Unrelated Hematopoietic Cells

After the donor or cord blood unit is selected by the physician or transplant center, the hematopoietic cells are collected and delivered to the patient’s hospital. 

The estimated costs (U.S. dollars) for procuring unrelated hematopoietic cells (collection and delivery) vary by cell source.

NMDP costsa:
  • Marrow or PBSC donor: $27,200 to $45,300
  • Cord blood unit: $12,500 to $41,300

a If a transplant is canceled, the services and tests already performed for donor workup will be billed. NMDP donor workup costs, $480 to $9,700, include exams, tests and procedures to ensure the safety of the donor and the patient:
  • An informational session
  • A physical exam
  • Additional HLA tests
  • For bone marrow donation: autologous whole blood collection. (The donor often receives his or her own blood shortly after bone marrow is collected.)
  • For PBSC donation: filgrastim (G-CSF) injections by medical personnel
