Costs of Recovery and Long-term Follow-up after a BMT.

When the patient returns home after a hematopoietic cell transplant, the focus is on:

  • Preventing infection
  • Early detection and treatment of infection and side effects such as GVHD (graft-versus-host disease)
  • Returning the patient to his or her previous lifestyle, as much as possible 

Because medical costs vary by region of the country and other factors, a listing of the common procedures and items are included as well as costs to the patient and patient’s family.

Medical costs:
  • Office visits
  • Prescriptions such as:
    • Antibiotics
    • Immunosuppressants, including corticosteroids
    • Anti-nausea medications
  • Pain medications
  • Home health care
  • Psychiatric coverage
  • Dietary supplements
  • Wigs

Costs to the patient:
  • Home preparation, such as cleaning carpets and drapery, replacing air filters and cleaning air ducts
  • Child care
  • Transportation
  • Food
  • Clothing to minimize the discomfort caused by GVHD
