When the patient returns home after a hematopoietic cell transplant, the focus is on:
- Preventing infection
- Early detection and treatment of infection and side effects such as GVHD (graft-versus-host disease)
- Returning the patient to his or her previous lifestyle, as much as possible
Because medical costs vary by region of the country and other factors, a listing of the common procedures and items are included as well as costs to the patient and patient’s family. Medical costs:
- Office visits
- Prescriptions such as:
- Antibiotics
- Immunosuppressants, including corticosteroids
- Anti-nausea medications
- Pain medications
- Home health care
- Psychiatric coverage
- Dietary supplements
- Wigs
Costs to the patient:
- Home preparation, such as cleaning carpets and drapery, replacing air filters and cleaning air ducts
- Child care
- Transportation
- Food
- Clothing to minimize the discomfort caused by GVHD
