Outcomes

Transplant timing, conditioning regimen and cell source can affect patient survival outcomes for unrelated hematopoietic cell transplantation in people who have:

  • Hematologic malignancies, such as leukemia, lymphoma and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)
  • Genetic and immune system disorders, such as severe aplastic anemia, Fanconi anemia, severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS), Hurler's syndrome, adreneoleukodystrophy (ALD) and metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD)

Patient outcomes continue to improve because of transplant advances in:

  • Non-myeloablative (reduced-intensity) preparative regimen
  • Sources of hematopoietic cells
  • Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matching
  • Patient care after transplant to prevent infection and manage  complications
