Support when you need a blood stem cell transplant
Preparing for transplant
There’s a lot to think about before a blood stem cell transplant, also known as a blood or marrow transplant (BMT) or bone marrow transplant. There are steps you can take to prepare yourself and your family for what’s ahead. Access checklists and resources to make preparing for your transplant day as smooth as possible.
Patient support
You may not be sure where to start or what kind of support you need. Connect with our Patient Support Center for guidance and support. Our team can: answer your questions about the transplant process, provide financial grant information, help you access clinical trials, offer educational resources and much more.
Financial support
Even if you have insurance coverage for your transplant, you need to understand what is covered and what isn’t so you can plan for costs. NMDP can help pay for medical or other expenses through our Patient Financial Assistance Program—we also offer additional resources and tips that can help you prepare.
Caregiver support
If you’re the caregiver for a loved one who needs a blood stem cell transplant, you play a vital role. But being a caregiver can feel isolating and comes with unique challenges. Receive support over the phone from our team and access resources online just for caregivers.
Support for children and teens who need transplant
Children and teenagers diagnosed with a medical condition that requires a transplant have very different needs from adults. Access resources for your family—including those tailored to children, like our Ava + Bo YouTube series, to help them prepare for what’s ahead.
Talking with family and friends
Having conversations about your transplant can feel overwhelming. Learn how to prepare for these discussions, communicate your needs and what to do if someone doesn't understand your decisions.
Life after transplant
Life continues to change after transplant. Explore what’s next and what your life after transplant might look like.
If you have not chosen a transplant center yet
Ask these additional questions to understand your options:
- Do I have a case manager assigned to help me?
- Does my plan require me to get treatment at a Center of Excellence (COE) or Designated or Preferred Transplant Center? Where can I find a list of these centers?
- Where can I find a list of in-network transplant centers?
- If I don’t have a transplant center in-network, does my plan provide any coverage for me at an out-of-network transplant center?
