When everything changed
Just before her first birthday, Aspen began developing fevers and symptoms that at first seemed like a normal childhood cold. After multiple appointments, medications and tests, her mom took her to the emergency room, where Aspen was diagnosed with leukemia. As she began treatment, doctors told her family she would need a bone marrow transplant.
Thankfully, NMDPSM helped find Kelsey, a 23-year-old woman who became Aspen’s donor. In April 2021, Aspen received her bone marrow transplant at Boston Children’s Hospital.
When Aspen experienced a molecular relapse, Kelsey stepped up once again to help by providing another donor infusion.

Connected for life
Today, Aspen remains creative, curious and has a great imagination.
This year, Aspen met her donor Kelsey, for the very first time at the NMDP Gala in New York City. What began as a life-saving connection quickly became something even more meaningful.
During the event, their reunion was emotional, filled with hugs, smiles and a heartfelt conversation as they reflected on the journey that connected their lives forever.
Kelsey’s support has meant so much for Aspen and her family. From stepping up twice to help Aspen during treatment to finally meeting in person at the gala, their connection became a powerful reminder of the lasting impact one donor can make.
A family that keeps fighting
Aspen is once again thriving and back to chasing her dreams. Her love for animals, music and art is as strong as ever, and her kitchen table is once again filled with color, sketches and imagination.
Inspired by Aspen’s resilience, her parents have become passionate advocates for donor awareness. They continue sharing her story to support other families and bring hope to patients still waiting for a match.
You never know whose life you might save just by being on the registry.”
