From one lifeline to a lifetime of dreams: Julia’s journey

Whether she’s traveling to dance performances, singing her heart out or practicing her golf swing with her dad, Julia is always chasing her dreams. At just five years old, she was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, and suddenly her future was at risk.

Mom saw the signs

Julia was in kindergarten when her mother, a pediatric nurse, noticed unusual bruising and fatigue. Trusting her knowledge, she searched for answers and soon learned of Julia’s condition.

After months of treatments, doctors determined she needed a blood stem cell transplant. Her family was tested, but no one was a match, so they turned to the NMDP RegistrySM.

Meet Julia

Julia is a dedicated student with a passion for acting and social studies. Though she’s young, her journey and her dreams are an inspiration to us all. Even during her most challenging days, she focused on the positive. She remembers the kindness of her nurses, who did her hair, let her color on the windows and even hid an “Elf on the Shelf” to make the holidays feel special.

Julia received her transplant at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where her strength became an inspiration to other patients on her floor.

When she finally returned home, more surprises were waiting, including meeting the person who made it all possible—her blood stem cell donor, Erica.

A bond beyond blood

Erica and Julia's story didn't end with the transplant; it began. Over time, they grew closer, sharing holiday visits and summer days at the lake together. What started as a life-saving decision became a lasting bond.

On World Marrow Donor Day, they stood side by side on the football field during the Nebraska vs. Michigan game, celebrating their journey in front of thousands. A moment worthy of their journey.
