NMDP℠ Barbara Buchbinder Nurse Research Program

No one likes to think of a child getting cancer. But many patients we serve are children who need a blood stem cell transplant for their best chance for a cure. Pediatric patients need a unique and specialized approach to their care that reflects their growth and development physically, socially and psychologically.

That’s why we’re funding research by pediatric blood stem cell transplant nurses through the NMDP Barbara Buchbinder Nurse Research Program.

Investing in blood stem cell transplant nurse researchers

Awarded for the first time in 2024, the Buchbinder Nurse Research Program supports blood stem cell transplant nurses whose research aims to improve the transplant experience—and outcomes—for pediatric patients who have a blood stem cell transplant.

The Buchbinder Nurse Research Program also hopes to attract new nursing talent to the blood stem cell transplant field.

The annual $25,000 research grant is awarded to a chosen blood stem cell transplant nurse through an application and review process.

Honoring the memory of a blood stem cell transplant nurse

NMDP established the Barbara Buchbinder Nurse Research Program through a philanthropic gift honoring Barbara.

Barbara was a beloved wife and mother of two. She dedicated more than 20 years of her nursing career to pediatric hematology/oncology and blood stem cell transplant care. She loved few things more than pediatric transplant (only her two lovely daughters) and her warmth, strength and resilience knew no bounds.

You can join the Buchbinder family in supporting research focused on improving patient outcomes by giving a gift today.

Along with supporting pediatric nurse researchers, NMDP invests in early-career physician-scientists through the NMDP Amy Strelzer Manasevit Research Program.

The Barbara Buchbinder Nurse Research Program commemorates Barbara’s desire to change the lives of pediatric transplant patients through impactful research. Her spirit will continue through the next generation of pediatric nurse researchers so honored to receive this incredible award.”
